Strong winds wreak havoc across Southern Ontario

First Published:

A wind warning was in effect for most of Southern Ontario on Wednesday as a powerful storm roared through the region, leaving at least 100,000 people without power.

In Hamilton, a cab was damaged when a KFC sign came crashing down. The bucket sign destroyed the windshield but there were no injuries.

A corner in downtown Hamilton was also closed when parts of a roof ripped off and bricks came crashing down on the sidewalk below. It happened at Cannon St. near James St. North. Police say shingles and siding were blowing onto the roadway.

High winds caused several homes under construction near Montrose and Brown roads in Niagara Falls to collapse. No one was hurt.

A number of traffic lights were without power across Hamilton, Burlington and Niagara. Police were warning residents to stay away from downed power lines across the area.
