U.S. Steel Canada workers and retirees will be back in court on Monday, asking an Appeals court to make public the secret deal that caused the Conservative government to drop a lawsuit against the company’s American parent.

Monday’s hearing is to see if the court will expedite a review of the ruling by the judge overseeing U.S. Steel Canada’s creditor protection that he didn’t have the authority to make the deal public.

The lawsuit was launched in 2009 because U.S. Steel had failed to live up to commitments it made when purchasing Stelco.

Steelworkers and other interested parties say knowing what U.S. Steel agreed to is critical for the negotiations regarding the company’s restructuring — noting that even the Canadian company president has said the deal was factored in when U.S. Steel evaluated the future of its operations in Canada.
