The United States is holding off on imposing steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada for at least a month.

Back in March, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tax on steel imports and 10 per cent on aluminum imports.

Canada and Mexico were among a group of countries granted temporary exemptions, which were set to expire at midnight Tuesday.

Monday night, the White House announced it would extend the temporary exemption until June 1.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has repeatedly told Trump that tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum would be bad for the economies of both countries.
