Staying fit as a new mom

Parenting a new baby can be one of the most blissful times in a woman’s life. But it can also be one of the most hectic.

Many new moms struggle to find time for exercise. And when you’re trying to get back into pre-pregnancy shape, that can be very frustrating.

While finding the time might be the biggest challenge, a lot of new moms don’t know how far to push themselves. Pregnancy changes your body, and it’s important to transition into the right workout, at the right time. A stroller fitness class geared specifically to moms and their babies offers some tips.

If these moms weren’t pushing strollers, you’d have no idea they’re still trying to shed a bit of baby weight.

Shauna Posca, new mom: “I’m still having trouble with my stomach area so this is helping. This class is definitely helping.”

Most of them have been sweating with ‘Hot Mom Stroller Fit’ in Burlington for several months.

With baby in tow, it’s a rare opportunity to focus on getting back in shape.

Caitlyn Sykes, new mom: “I was fit before the pregnancy. I did boxing, went to the gym, and this allows me to still work out and not worry about who’s going to look after Quinn.”

Tabitha Byrne, Hot Mom Stroller Fit Coach: “Your baby can cry, you can take that baby out and breast feed, or change a dirty diaper and it’s status quo around here.”

Babies aren’t just welcome, they’re incorporated into exercises. Even at home, new moms can lift and lunge with their little ones.

“You guys keep working out. I’ll baby-sit.”

The workout is demanding, so each mom is encouraged to adapt it to their post-baby fitness level.

It can be hard to wait, but most doctors recommend women take at least six weeks after birth before they start to work out, even more if they’ve had a caesarean section.”

Tabitha Byrne: “I have a lot of moms that come up to me after class and they’re very frustrated because they can’t even get their legs to their arms for a simple lower leg exercise.”

The workout focuses on core muscles that disappear during pregnancy, so moms are running on all cylinders when it’s time to chase after baby.

These moms totally showed me up. They are in fantastic shape. It’s important though, not to over exert yourself. Pushing yourself too hard post pregnancy can mess with your hormone levels and that can affect the flow of your breast milk.
