You don’t have to go far to find summer fun, and Elise Copps proves that with this Hamilton “Staycation”.

What better way to start your staycation in Hamilton than with a new perspective on the city. At the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum you can fly back in time, riding in one of their dozens of airworthy warplanes.

“It’s the only place in Canada you can do that” says CEO Dave Rohrer. You’ll see breathtaking panoramas of steeltown, and maybe even spot some of your favourite landmarks. “You can see the whole end of Lake Ontario, you can see Burlington waterfront and Hamilton harbour, you can see the new stadium, you can see downtown.”

Once you’re back on solid ground, you can explore the museum’s aircraft up close, before visiting one of the many farms you’ve seen from above.

At Puddicombe Estate, you can ride a miniature train around the property. The train does the whole hundred acres, including cherry fields, grape vineyards and peach trees. You can sample cider made 100 percent from the farm’s peaches.

After that you’ll be refreshed and ready to take on one of Hamilton’s famed waterfalls. Standing at the base of Albion Falls will make you feel like you’re in a tropical paradise even though it’s just a short drive off the highway.

Finally, cap off your day with a Hamilton favourite: food trucks. The city is known for its food truck rallies, like Wheel Food Wednesdays in Binbrook, where you can choose from multiple mobile eateries.
