Four students at a St. Catharines High School were hospitalized after taking anti-depressents that were not prescribed for them.
It’s not clear how the students at Denis Morris High School got a hold of the medication or why they took them.
School staff called 911 after the teens, according to the school board, “appeared to be under the influence of something.”
The four students were rushed to hospital for treatment.
In a statement the school board says the students took an anti-depressant and say it appears to be an isolated incident.
However, students at Denis Morris say they aren’t shocked to hear their classmates had abused prescription medication.
According to Health Canada, over 80 thousand Canadian teenagers used prescription drugs to get high last year.
Jeff Sica, a drug conselor with the Community Addiction Services of Niagara says it’s a dangerous time to experiment with drugs because teens’ brains are still developing.
The school board sent out robocalls alerting parents of the incident.
In its statement it says “Would like parents to take this opportunity to have an open conversation with their children about the dangers of taking medications that have not been prescribed for them. ”
Niagara Regional Police say they are looking into the matter.
They taking prescription medication that is not prescribed to you could lead to a criminal record if not death.
