Sunday will mark the 5th anniversary of a mysterious murder case in Caledon, that remains unsolved.

Sonia Varaschin was known as a friendly, bubbly nurse, with an outgoing personality.  She disappeared in 2010 and police are still wondering who would want to kill her .

42 year old Sonia failed to show up for work in Mississauga on August 30th 2010, and when police found her Toyota Corolla behind the Orangeville town hall, it was immediately apparent that foul play was involved. The car was heavily stained with blood, and when authorities went to her home, they discovered more blood. 6 days later, Sonia’s body was found near Beech Grove Sideroad, in Caledon.

The police seized immediately, on the best evidence they had. Footprints made by a type of boot sold only at Mark’s Work Wearhouse.

The lead however, did not lead to an arrest, and now, 5 years later police are still looking for a killer. There is a $50 000 reward posted for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Police are also asking the public to take a close look at a video. It was taken around 6pm on the night of August 30th, behind the Orangeville town hall. 2 people can be seen together in a gazebo, heavily screened by trees.
Police believe that the people seen in the video, may be witnesses, or possibly suspects in the Varaschin case. They are hoping that anyone with information that may help to identify them, will contact the OPP.

Something that may help to jog a memory or 2,  at the time of Sonia’s murder her family reported that she had recently left her job in Shelbourne to work in Mississauga because of workplace conflict. They also told police that, as a shift-worker, she’d had an ongoing dispute with 3 young men living in a neighbouring townhouse over noise.

Police have not confirmed either claim.
