Iris scans, fingerprints and facial recognition… that’s what people from more than 150 countries will have to agree to, if they need a visa to come to Canada. It’s part of the Harper government’s new “biometrics plan” to “protect Canadians”.
According to the Prime Minister, Canadians are in danger. ” Jihadi terrorists have threatened Canada and Canadians by name, and with a clarity that leaves no room for doubt. ”

But fear not Canada – the Harper Tories are here to save you “When I talk about the mission against ISIS, the things I’m announcing today, and all of these actions…we remain the only party in Parliament, committed to these things.”

What are these things? Well, the Conservatives plan to spend more than 300-Million dollars over the next five years, to expand the use of biometric screening. They will give C-SIS 136-million, to strengthen unspecified “front Line Capacity”
And the Canada Revenue agency will get ten million to weed out Jihadis using phony charities, to raise money for terrorism.

In addition, they’ve pledged additional 50 million dollars in annual spending for the RCMP, and the Canadian Border Services Agency.

Biometric screening, the ability to use fingerprints, eye scans and other unique physical characteristics to positively identify individuals — is not new. Immigration Canada has been using fingerprinting for more than two decades. But the scope of the new proposal is vast and the rules for its use are vague.

And while the system may capture a few “bad guys”, Ann Cavoukian, the former privacy commissioner for Ontario is very worried that there’s not enough protection, for millions of honest Canadians. “This is the most sensitive personal information that exists, because it identifies who you are. In the wrong hands, it can wreak havoc.”
