Six Nations is asking Haldimand County to re-consider its decision to remove a roadblock in Caledonia.
On Monday council voted to tear down the blockade at the entrance to the former Douglas Creek Estates. The blockade has been there since 2006, when protesters set up camp claiming the land the development was on belongs to the Six Nations Confederacy.
Mayor Ken Hewitt says the blockade was recently moved to the centre of the road, blocking traffic, and that the roadway belongs to the county.
Chief Ava Hill released a statement this afternoon, saying: “Mayor Hewitt’s statement about ‘working with its neighbours’ and ‘moving forward in a unified fashion’ is contradictory to Haldimand County’s resolution to remove the ‘illegal blockades’ without first consulting with its neighbours in Six Nations.”
“Actions speak louder than words and Haldimand County’s decision and proposed actions, if carried through, will only deepen the divide on all sides as opposed to creating unity.”
