Police are investigating a mass shooting last night at a townhouse complex in northwest Toronto.

Shots were fired just before 6 o’clock last night on the front lawn of a community housing complex on Driftwood Ave. A woman and four men in their 20s were shot. Police say all the victims are known to them and that the shooting could be connected to another ongoing investigation.

The gunmen took off in a vehicle and 30 minutes later they were stopped by undercover officers on Elmhurst Dr. Police say several people left the car and ran in different directions, some running into backyards. Four people are under arrest; Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after one of the accused was shot by a Toronto Police officer. Deputy chief Peter Sloly said “one of our officers performed potentially life-saving CPR on that individual who was still in significant medical distress.” He was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive.

Police have now released the names of the four men arrested. They are:

  • Akeem Bailey, 29;
  • Clifton Vassel Youria, 29;
  • Maurice Smith, 21, all of Toronto;
  • Daniel Duante-Alvarez, 20, of Mississauga.

They face a total of 112 charges. The names of the people shot have not been released by police.

Sloly adds “We’ll do our very best to get to the bottom of this as well to calm the situation down.” The SIU will continue to investigate on Elmhurst Drive this afternoon.
