A man who knew the gunman when he spent time in a shelter in British Columbia says he didn’t appear to have any signs of mental illness.

Paul Jarjapka says he would frequently argue with Bibeau over breakfast at the shelter where Jarjapka is a counselor. He says Bibeau was a devout Muslim — angry with Canada and the U.S. and definitely wanted to leave. And when they argued about what was happening in the Middle east — he described bibeau’s rationale as warped when it came to the u-s led bombing campaign and any possible retaliation here.

Jarjapka says he never heard Bibeau talking about ISIS. But adds that he didn’t hide his support for what the terrorist group was doing in Iraq and Syria when it was mentioned on the news. And while the counselor says he knew Bibeau had a drug problem, he seemed to be thinking clearly just a few weeks ago before he left the shelter and came back east.
