I Origins is a science fiction film written and directed by Mike Cahill (Another Earth). The film follows molecular biologist Dr. Ian Gray (Michael Pitt) who is studying the evolution of the eye. Ian studies the eye in an attempt to disprove the existence of god. After he publishes his ground breaking work, he makes another discovery, one that will challenge the scientific and spiritual beliefs of the world.

Cahill loosely based his leading character on Richard Dawkins. “Ian is a researcher whose work leads him to question his beliefs on science and spirituality. When we first meet him, he believes in proof; he believes in data. Spirituality is guided by faith, which is the belief in something without evidence. The character of Ian is trying to demonstrate real, practical examples of each stage of the eye’s evolution. If he can, he will have made an unprecedented discovery that he hopes will settle the argument.” Cahill and Pitt (who also acted as an Executive Producer on the project) are already thinking about a sequel for I Origins. The continuation of the story would see Dr. Ian Grey dealing with the real world applications of his discoveries in the future. I Origins is rated 14A.
