Toronto Police will now be tasked to figure out how this tragedy happened during a busy holiday weekend where uniformed officers were seen throughout the city.
Deputy Chief Peter Sloly said earlier today that Toronto Police had a visible presence outside Muzik nightclub on the exhibition grounds for the OVO fest after party before the shooting erupted.

He said that as the evening progressed, more officers were called in to deal with the growing mass of people outside the venue. The club hires private security personel to greet club-goers and to supply security checks. However, that wasn’t enough to prevent this morning’s fatal shooting. Here’s the deputy chief on the security procedures and how close officers were to the fire fight.

“There was private security present. They’ve been very forthcoming with the investigation and the information that they had. They continue to assist with the investigation. We have an ongoing relationship with management of Muzik club for these events and so all of that was in place. Standard operation is that security does all the pat down and wanding if necessary. Our police officers provide a presence around a venue. Literally our officers were running towards live fire incidents. The officer who was by the girl who was shot and killed was seconds behind her and was able to do CPR before her dying breaths.”

While they responded to 911 calls, we were told by a member of the Toronto paramedics did not have medical staff on site while the after party was happening.many people were asking how a gun could have gotten through the security who were, as the Deputy chief said, patting people down and using metal detecting wands. He said at this point they can’t confirm how a gun got inside, and whether it went through the front door or through other areas of this massive building. I’ve spoken to a few people who are familiar with the venue and they have told me that this space is far too big and is normally understaffed when it comes to supplying security during events.
