Running a small business can be a challenge. But one Niagara-on-the-Lake business ran into a challenge it wasn’t prepared for when it received a gas bill almost 20 times higher than normal. Mia Gordon has their story.

“This one is 90 and this one is 2000.”

Stephanie Goertz’s gas bill for her company Jags Repairz usually runs around $90 a month. But this month, her her bill was almost $400, with a back charge of over $2,000.

“You just pay it, you don’t question it.”

But with a bill so high. Stephanie did question it.

Stephanie received a phone bill just last week for $2,000, nearly $2,000 more than what she usually pays. According to Enbridge, it was because they had been misreading her meter for the past four years.

“Why do I have to pay for an error for someone’s incompetent billings and readings.”

Stephanie’s little business only uses two gas heaters, something she says would not cost $400.

According to Stephanie, Enbridge told her that if she doesn’t pay, they will shut down her gas and contact the credit bureau. And as a small business owner, she can’t let that happen..

“It’s tough to make ends meet but for everybody and to get this bill in such a large amount I was shocked. Your hands are basically tied because they are a major corporation.”

Stephanie told us that Enbridge is looking into the bill and told her they may drop it down to only two-years pay. But she still feels it’s unfair to pay for their mistake. We have called Enbridge and they have told us that they were making some calls and looking into exactly what happened and if Stephanie is at fault, but at this point we have not heard back from them.
