Sarcoa Closed

First Published:

People who were looking forward to hosting their event at the picturesque waterfront restaurant Sarcoa will be forced to make other arrangements. Recently their lease had been terminated by the Hamilton Waterfront Trust, who are leasing out property from the city.

Before Sarcoa had their lease revoked, they allowed a company called Jem hospitality to run events out of the venue and now all of those people who were hoping to host events there are in limbo.

Jem is now offering other options for customers. In a release by Jem hospitality it lists the Atrium banquet and conference centre as one of 4 locations for people who had booked events at Sarcoa. However, Jem remains tight-lipped about the location of the other 3 venues. Only saying they aren’t far from where Sarcoa was located at the Discovery Centre.

Jem says their business has become collateral damage in a dispute between Sarcoa and the Trust. “We have been advised that although we always paid our rent to Sarcoa, it was not making its payments to the Waterfront Trust.”

Last Tuesday, the Trust posted a notice of termination on the doors of Sarcoa saying they racked up $226 000 in unpaid rent, among other breaches. Sarcoa’s lawyer responded saying his clients deny the allegations, and says they’ve been in a legal battle with the Trust and city since 2015 for preventing it from throwing patio parties with loud music

Jem says they will soon be announcing details of the “arrangement” they have made with the Burlington Atrium, including access to the three unnamed venues. However, it’s still unclear what will happen to those who want their deposits back if they’re not happy with the new venues.
