San Andreas

San Andreas is a disaster film directed by Canadian Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). Peyton previously worked with San Andreas star Dwayne Johnson on Journey 2, the sequel to the 2008 film Journey to the Center of the Earth. The film also stars Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Colton Haynes, and Paul Giamatti.

After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning. And when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.

Warner Bros. has been going all in with the natural disaster genre lately. Last August they released the tornado spectacle Into the Storm, which didn’t fare too well domestically, but made up for that poor showing by earning $113-million overseas. One thing that film lacked was a bonafide star like Johnson. Over the last five years movies starring The Rock have averaged just over $125.6-million in total box office revenue, with his latest release Furious 7 still pulling in cash at the theatre. We’ll have to see if San Andreas rumbles to the top of the box office or crumbles to the ground.

San Andreas is rated PG.
