Retaliatory tariffs now in effect

First Published:

Today is the first day that Canada’s retaliatory tariffs against US steel, aluminum and other products went into effect.

Some Americans celebrating the long weekend in Niagara Falls say it’s the right move by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, adding that Trump’s tariffs on Canada were uncalled for in the first place.

Our neighbours down south visiting Canada’s biggest tourist attraction say this trade war is hurting both countries.

The Canadian measures take aim at 16.6 billion dollars worth of goods, matching dollar for dollar the tariffs imposed by the US.

They include a 25% tariff on unfinished iron and steel and a list of consumer goods like yogurt, maple syrup and toilet paper to name a few. Those items will be tagged with a 10% duty.

The trade war could further escalate, today, US President Donald Trump reiterated his threat to impose tariffs on Canadian vehicles.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland was in Hamilton on Friday, re-affirming the governments promise to take action against the US.

When it comes to the ongoing re-negotiation of North American free trade agreement, Trump says he’s going to wait until after November’s mid-term elections, adding that he could quickly sign an agreement with Canada and Mexico but he’s not, saying he is not happy with the current deal.

Today Prime Minister Trudeau met with workers at a plant in Leamington, where the tomato paste used in French’s ketchup is made. Ketchup happens to be one of the sixty products that Canada will be collecting duties on now. Trudeau thanked residents there and Canadians for always standing up for one another.
