The first day of school is daunting for any child but imagine what it’s like if you came from another country and don’t speak the language. 10 year old Eid Mekbel and his 8 year old sister, Youmna are two brave Syrian refugees who are the embarking on a new school year and a new way of life.

Their family fled from Syria to Jordan in 2013, after the war claimed their mom’s life, severed their limbs and robbed them of their childhood.

“There was an airplane was flying over, like above the house and dropped three barrels and then my mom died and then I lost my left leg and Eid his two legs.”

The Mekbel family arrived in Canada in January and Eid and Youmna began attending Dr. Davey school in March. Their teachers say both children have adjusted to their new life in Canada remarkably well. For these two youngsters, this isn’t just the start of a new school year, it’s the start of a new life.
