It’s a rare sighting and animal lovers say if you see one you should pull out your camera and snap a shot. An albino squirrel was seen yesterday in St. Catharines which had some people in awe of the rare sight.
Lee Callaghan took pictures of the albino squirrel yesterday in St. Catharines.
“I’ve seen 2 in my career, one in St. Catharines and one in Niagara-on-the-Lake,” says Kevin Strooband of the Lincoln County Humane Society.
Researchers say the chance of a squirrel being born an albino is one in 100,000.
“It’s cool. I don’t know, it’s neat to see. I usually see a white cat but never a white squirrel,” says Janet Chermaz.
Janet snapped pictures yesterday too.
Not to be confused with the albino squirrel is the white squirrel, which is something the town of Exeter in Southern Ontario is known for. A true albino has either red or blue eyes.
“It’s just a genetic, almost a defect, that makes them not have that pigmentation but they’re completely healthy,” says Strooband.
They make for easy prey because of their inability to camouflage and other grey squirrels think they are kind of nutty and will rarely mate with them.
