It’s the largest and most successful fundraising event in the Niagara region. Tomorrow, more than 12 000 walkers and runners will lace up their shoes to participate in the Rankin Cancer Run.

The numbers are impressive. In nine years, the community has raised more than $4.6 million.

David Gorman lost his battle with malignant melanoma 11 days ago. He was a huge supporter of the Ranking Cancer Run, and inspired his daughter Savannah to get involved.

Last year she raised more than $600, the most money raised at Carleton Public School. This year her goal is $1000.

Savannah and her sister Kacy loved doing things with their dad, including riding along the canal and making copper bracelets with him.

“David was an incredibly engaged person in terms of his kids and their activities. He was their biggest cheerleader.” said Jennifer Gorman, Savannah’s mother.

They’re getting ready at the Grantham Lions Club in St. Catharines for tomorrow’s big event. There are 60 schools alone registered.

“What we’ve noticed for the first time this year is families have branched off from the school teams and they’ve started teams of 4 and 6. And the reason why is someone was newly diagnosed in the family.”

Savanah has raised $800 so far this year.
