Questions about stalled hydro project near occupation site

First Published:

The towers have no hydro lines on them.

Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett says protesters blocked hydro crews from putting up the lines — even though they do not run through Six Nations territory. He’s questioning the lack of progress.

“There they sit. The wires come up to the edge of Caledonia. There they stop. The infrastructure is there. The tower is there. Some of the towers as we know have been disassembled, some of the trestles are now used as blockades. But there is going to come a point when we will need that electricity.”

But Six Nations lawyer Aaron Detlor says Hydro One is waiting until negotiations between the band and government officials come to a conclusion.

“Hydro One is simply taking a position that until land rights issues are resolved they’re going to take a step back and try to let the issues try to be resolved before they move forward.”

The province says the work was put on hold to reduce tension during negotiations. It says at this point supply needs are being met through the existing system.
