UPDATE: Toronto Police now say this attack did not happen. Find the story here.

Toronto Police are searching for a man who cut off an 11-year-old girl’s hijab on her way to school.

“I feel confused, scared and terrified.”

She was walking to school when a man dressed in black came up behind her, pulled off her hood and started cutting, she told police.

Once she realized what was happening she screamed and ran up to a group of friends.

But the man came back just as she was waiting for her brother, who was stopped at a light across the street.

After the second time he just smiled and ran away.

The hijab, which police have taken away as evidence, was cut from the back up a total of 12 inches.

Once the kids made it to Pauline Johnson junior public school in Scarborough staff called 911 and her family.

The girl’s mother says she’s glad her daughter was not physically harmed and hopes police investigate this as a hate crime.

Police say he’s described as Asian in his 20’s about 5 foot 8 to 6 feet tall with a moustache and glasses.

Police are working with the Attorney General’s office to make a determination on whether this was a hate crime
