The trial of an Ontario woman who gave pigs water on a hot day while they were on route to a slaughter house last year began in Burlington this morning. Anita Krajnc is facing criminal mischief charges and could end up serving jail time for her actions. Animal rights activists gathered in front of the court house to voice their support for Anita.

The video of Anita giving pigs a drink on June 22 of last year went viral online and sparked outrage amongst animal rights supporters when she was charged. The truck driver in the video, Jeffrey Veldjesgraaf, was the crowns first witness and testified that he animals are given water before and after they’re loaded onto the trucks, but that he won’t feed them while they’re in transit and that he is not obligated to until they’ve been in transit for 36 hours. He also testified the guidelines for transporting animals is aimed at ensuring the welfare and safety of animals and for protecting the welfare of the food chain. He said it’s not uncommon for activist to offer water to the pigs, and that the slaughterhouse was notified and still accepted them.

If convicted Anita Krajnc could be sentenced to up to six months in jail or be forced to pay up to $5 000 in fines.
