2009 saw the lowest number of smog advisories since 2002.
There were three for the entire year. Emissions of sulpher dioxide and carbon monoxide have significantly decreased since 2000, and there’s been a decrease in fine particulate matter.
Provincial Environment Minister John Wilkinson says we’re headed in the right direction. “If we make tough decisions, if we decide as province that we’re going to eliminate the use of dirty coal to generate electricity, if we strengthen air standards.. If we drive more fuel efficient and cleaner cars if we invest in public transit, even though the economy ..Even though theres more people we can actually make a demonstrable difference.”
Wilkinson adds many people have said they’ve noticed bluer skies lately — and now the numbers back that up.
