One person is dead following an early-morning fire at a high-rise building in Hamilton.

Firefighters were called to 95 Hess St. shortly before 1:30 a.m. Friday. They located smoke conditions on the 16th floor of the building and a fire in one of the units.

During the search and rescue, a man was found unresponsive in the unit. Emergency responders tried to resuscitate the resident as he was being transported to hospital but he was later pronounced dead.

Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and immediately started to a ventilation procedure to clear the building of smoke.

The victim’s identity is not being released until a next of kin is notified.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.

Officials say damage is estimated at $20,000.

Hamilton police are asking anyone who may have information that could help the investigation to contact Detective Constable David Tsuchida 1131 at 905-546-4861.

The Hamilton Fire Department is advising residents who live in high-rise apartment buildings to take time to review the ‘Occupants Procedures’ within the Fire Safety Plan posted on each floor of the building.
