One dead in Welland fire

One person has died with another hurt after a fire broke out inside a home in Welland this morning.

The blaze began on the upper floor of a unit inside the Northtown Co-operative Homes complex at 366 Thorold Road West before 3 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke conditions that turned out to be a significant fire throughout the second floor.

After it was put out they discovered a woman still inside had died.  A man was also taken to Welland hospital for treatment.

About thirty firefighters from multiple stations were called in at the height of the blaze.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been contacted to look into the cause.
