After nine months the Special Investigations Unit has cleared two Niagara regional officers of any wrong doing following a shoot out at an apartment complex in Niagara last year. Constable Neal Ridley and Constable Jack Braun were met with gun shots when they responded to a suicide call at the Canboro Gardens apartment complex in Fenwick near Welland last October. The two officers were wounded and sidelined from active duty for months. One was hit in the foot, the other in the neck.

29-year-old Corey Richardson was also wounded. According to the SIU he stepped outside of his apartment and fired in the direction of the officers. The arm’s length agency is called in whenever an officer is involved in a death or serious injury of a citizen. It concluded that if the officers didn’t act quickly Richardson could have killed them. In the exchange of gunfire Richardson suffered a significant head wound and police say charges against him may never be laid.
