Oakville man’s ticket to Hollywood

First Published:

Sean Reyes is being recognized for his musical gift, which was only honed after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

Most of Reyes’ skull has been replaced with plastic after he was the victim of an assault in 2009. A large portion of his memory of that time has been lost, but Reyes has been told that while out celebrating his birthday with family and friends he was outside an Oakville nightclub when someone tried to pick a fight. He says he tried to walk away, but was hit and he fell and smashed his head on the pavement.

That impact caused a traumatic brain injury. Besides scars, the injury has left Reyes with no sense of smell. The man who hit him was charged with aggravated assault, but was never prosecuted.

After the injury Reyes found a renewed dedication to music.Last year, he was an Indie Music Channel Award winner and was invited back this year.

Traumatic brain injuries are one of the leading causes of disability and death in Canada, especially in men under the age of 40. However, Reyes does not let his injury handicap him, and is instead using his story and his music to talk about violence.
