No answers for deadly Dundas fire

First Published:

Still no answers tonight in what caused the house fire early yesterday morning that killed a Dundas couple in their 60’s. Hamilton Police are calling it suspicious, while people who knew the couple are in shock.

A day after a fire ripped through this single story home on Greening Court, investigators still couldn’t get inside.

The roof has collapsed, windows are broken, most of it destroyed.

They’re trying to figure out what caused the early morning fire that killed Carla and Alan Rutherford.

Firefighters pulled 64-year old Carla Rutherford out of the burning home when they arrived just before 4 yesterday morning.

Her husband, 63-year old Alan Rutherford, was outside was emergency crews arrived. He was rushed to hospital with burns to 80% of his body, where he died yesterday afternoon.

Their two dogs, who were seen walking with neighbours today, were rescued from the basement by firefighters just before the roof caved in.

Investigators from Hamilton Police and the office of the fire marshal were working in the backyard.

Meanwhile, those that knew the couple are in shock.

The Rutherfords were members of the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club for the last 16 years.

The club has cancelled its race on Thursday, and instead will have a procession around the bay.

Police have been talking to people in the neighbourhood, and say they’re for looking for surveillance video and any information that could help their investigation.
