Niagara police officer charged with assault

A 15-year veteran with the Niagara Regional Police Service has been charged with assault after a teenager was injured in the Town of Lincoln.

Const. Ken Schonewille was arrested on Oct. 9 after a member of the public contacted detectives from St. Catharines Criminal Investigations Branch.

The alleged assault happened after an interaction between the on duty officer and a 17-year-old boy. Police say the teen suffered a minor injury.

Schonewille has been suspended with pay pending further investigation.

He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on November 21 in St. Catharines.
