A Niagara man has been sentenced for his role in a child sexual abuse case involving six children and six adults. 28-year-old Arie Van Es was sentenced to a six year prison term but will only spend 4 and half years behind bars because of time served. The crown was asking for 10 years.
The 28-year-old was arrested in January as part of “Project Iceberg” an investigation into an alleged exploitation ring that targeted children as young as four.
“I can tell you I’ve been a police officer for 26 years now and I have to say this is the most horrific investigation I have ever been a part of.” Kim Mcallister, Niagara Regional police.
He pleaded guilty to committing multiple sexual acts against a four year old child that if explicitly spelled out would be as one crown prosecutor referred to it as stomach turning. Police also seized pornographic photos of the little girl on Van Es’ phone. In a video recorded confession Van Es stated that he has always had an attraction to children. He will have to register as a sexual offender upon his release and have limited access to the internet and public places where children are.
He was facing 11 charges including sexual assault but ultimately convicted of 5 charges including sexual interference and possessing child pornography. The child has since been living in foster care.
The child’s parents are also facing a number of charges, they are among 6 people charged following the nine month investigation.
