It’s been a year since they broke ground for Niagara College’s Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre. The facility on the College’s Welland campus is still under construction but just a few months away from being complete.
The province spent $4.2 million towards the building, while the Walker family, whom the centre is named after donated another $1.2 million.
The 15 thousand square foot facility will specialize in engineering design, 3D digital scanning technology and manufacturing. There are more than 900 manufacturing companies in Niagara and the sector accounts for 16% of the region’s GDP.
The college worked on 168 applied research projects last year. Currently most of work is done out of two labs that were once classrooms. The new facility will provide a ton more space, something the current lab lacks.
The building is expected to be up and running before summer.
