New Year’s resolutions

First Published:

This Sunday is New Year’s eve, which means a lot of people have started thinking about their resolutions for the year. Whether you’re trying to get fit or trying get more organized, New Years resolutions can be a good idea, for some people, according to psychologist Karen Rowa.

“For other people it could be a disaster. Maybe they’re chronically setting high expectations for themselves and this is another opportunity to feel they’re not living up to something.”

If you’re the type to be often comparing yourself, unfavourably to others, you probably shouldn’t make New Year’s resolutions, you’ll just end up more discouraged. But on the other hand, if you get excited about accomplishing something you’ll do really well with making resolutions.

Some tips for resolutions, or any big goal:
1. Be specific. For example, instead of deciding to eat better, decide how you’re going to eat better.
2. Be realistic. Choose a goal you can accomplish. Don’t be too lofty.
3. Make them measurable so you know when you’ve accomplished what you set out to do.
4. Base them on values. Why is this goal meaningful to you?
