Home Video Releases // January 27

One of the most original animated films of recent memory is heading to home video today, as is the film that led to Evan’s favourite interview of last year.

David Ayer’s WW2 tank drama was well received when it hit theatres in October, and now you can relive the harrowing action in the comfort of your living room. Brad Pitt stars as S/Sgt. Wardaddy, the leader of a close knit tank crew played by Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Peña, and Jon Bernthal. Ayer’s next project will be the upcoming Warner Bros. adaptation of DC Comics’ Suicide Squad set for release on August 5, 2016.

The Book of Life

Whenever Guillermo del Toro is involved in a film you know you’ll be getting something unique. Such is the case with The Book of Life, the animated film directed by Jorge Gutierrez that was inspired by Mexican folklore. Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman and more lend their voices to a cast of characters that more resemble marionettes than people. This visually stunning picture was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes but missed out on an Oscar nod.

The Judge

David Dobkin’s The Judge was the opening night film at TIFF last year, and while it offered some great performances from a great cast, the script hit too many cliches to make much of a critical splash. Surprisingly the film has received a bit of late awards recognition for Robert Duvall’s turn as the titular judge. The veteran actor received Critic’s Choice, SAG, Golden Globe, and Oscar nominations for Supporting Actor, but has been shut out so far by the unstoppable J. K. Simmons – a trend that will likely continue at next month’s Oscar ceremony.

Before I Go to Sleep

Normally a film starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth would be considered a pretty good bet. Unfortunately Before I Go to Sleep was more of a dud. Nicole Kidman stars as a woman who, after a car accident years earlier, has a severe case of amnesia, waking up every morning with no memory of her life since her twenties. Colin Firth stars as her husband while Mark Strong plays her therapist, both of whom are trying to help her cope in their own special way.
