The City of Hamilton has the highest number of native plant species in the GTHA and a new, detailed survey going before city council next week wants to make sure it stays that way.
The Hamilton Conservation Authority is getting high tech with a drone to observe a pond project at Christie Conservation Area.
Its work that’s part of “Nature Counts 2” – a 3 year study. It’s a check up for mother nature to identify environmentally significant areas.
The good news, over 2000 species of plants and wildlife were recorded, including 71 new species found like bald eagles.
And repeat visitors, like osprey, have returned twice now in the spring to raise their young.
The bad news – an increase in invasive species. But with the right information, they can be handled.
The city pays over 30 thousand dollars a year for the 3 year study. Next Tuesday council will hear the good news with the bad and be able to go from there.
