The town of Oakville wants motorcyclists to keep it down. A noise bylaw that came into effect in 2012 banned bikes that make excessive sound.
A free clinic was held at Town Hall today for riders to check if their motorcycles pass the noise test. They used a sound level meter held 50cm from the exhaust at a 45 degree angle.
Jim Cudmore can officially ride his bike down Lakeshore worry free.
But other motorcyclists aren’t allowed to ride in Oakville if their bikes are
louder than 92 decibels from the exhaust while idling.
“I knew it was a little bit loud but I’m glad to hear it’s passing so I know I’m not in trouble, ” Cudmore says
Oakville’s Bylaw Services Manager Jim Barry says the equipment used today is the same equipment that their officers are using. They’ll use this in the field as they move to an enforcement stage later this year.
For now those who fail do not have to worry about the $120 ticket.
“We’re just using this as an information opportunity of course if we catch them later on on the road, they would face charges, ” Barry says.
Council started looking into the bylaw after some residents who live near this Tim Hortons complained that there was excessive noise made by a group of motorcyclists who would gather there.
Barry says most bikes pass the test. Last year the town only handed out 3 tickets.
