An Oakville father was killed Friday evening during a bike ride through Milton, when he was hit by what police say was a drunk driver. It was shortly after 9:00pm, but still light enough to see. 50 year old Chris Harper was cycling south on Tremaine Road, en route to his northwest Oakville home, when he was struck by a car also heading south just past Lower Base Line. He was thrown into the ditch and died at the scene.
After the collision the driver kept going but a witness saw the car turn around and pass the scene again, the witness was able to record the licence plate and call police, who arrested the driver within 20 minutes.

33-year-old Michelle Maisey had been driving home to Oakville, but was found and arrested while still in Milton. The charges against her include drunk driving causing death, and failing to stop for a fatal collision.

Tremaine Road was back open and packed with traffic on Saturday, including a huge volume of cyclists. The new Pan Am Velodrome is located not far north of the fatal scene, but closer to the Velodrome the road is being widened and the space for cycling is clearly marked.
