He was hailed as the greatest Hamiltonian, and today is the day Lincoln Alexander is celebrated.

Students at the Hamilton school named after him marked the first national Lincoln Alexander Day with a special assembly. Federal multiculturalism minister Jason Kenney was a special guest at today’s event.

After the assembly, Kenney presented the school with a poster to mark the day. Students at the school said they have been inspired.

Three youth leaders from across the province were recognized today by Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, for their outstanding efforts to fight racial discrimination and promote positive social change.

Zuberi Attard of Thornhill received the award for founding a student association that gives newcomers a forum for open, safe discussion; while Madison Goodwill of Owen Sound was recognized for promoting aboriginal history and culture in her school and community.

Yosra Musa of Hamilton received the award for her key role in the development of McMaster university’s first African diaspora studies program.

The Lincoln Alexander award honours youth who have demonstrated leadership in eliminating racial discrimination in Ontario. Recipients receive a personalized certificate as well as a $5,000 cash award.
