One man is dead after a fiery crash in Fort Erie this morning. Police are trying to figure out why the driver veered off the road and crashed into an antique storage facility.

Fire fighters were called to the corner of Garrison road and Ridge road just after 1 this morning after a car slammed into a garage and burst into flames. The 46-year-old driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, died in the blaze. Fire officials say he is from the Fort Erie area but have not released his name.

A stretch of Ridge road was closed off throughout the morning as the fire marshal’s office and police investigated. Police say the car was travelling southbound on Ridge road towards Garrison road, that’s when it lost control and veered into the other lane. Police say the driver of the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire then steered back onto the road crossing over both lanes and slammed into the garage.

The garage was used as a repair and restoration shop for a local antique shop called “Antiques on the Ridge.” The owner of the antique shop says he was planning on opening his shop for the season this Friday.

Police say they are looking at whether the crash was alcohol related or if driver had a medical emergency at the time of the crash, however they don’t believe speed was a factor.
