LRT or bust

Will they, or won’t they? The question remains about whether Hamilton City Council will accept $1 billion from the province to build light rail transit. Some councilors insist that the decision has already been made, others are now floating the idea of a rapid bus system.

“It’s unfortunate, I wish the province would have given us the opportunity to spend the money where we see fit and I can guarantee we wouldn’t be embarking on an LRT.” Donna Skelly.

Donna Skelly, along with a few other councillors were hoping to re-examine the possibility of a rapid bus transit system instead of the proposed light rail transit system.

“That’s a 10 year old question, it’s impossible, we’re 10 years into this process. We’ve asked for the money, they’ve given us the money, at this point it’s nonsensical to bring it into the equation.” Sam Merulla.

City councillors learned if they don’t go ahead with the $1 billion LRT plan in the city, then they don’t get the $1 billion at all. But according to businesses in this downtown corridor where the LRT would go, they’re ok with that.

Sam Merulla told us if city council doesn’t accept this $1 billion to build the LRT system, then the money will go to another community in Ontario for an LRT project.
