The Leafs have added some veteran leadership to the organization.
Lou Lamoriello did a lot of winning in his 28 years in New Jersey and now, he’s in Toronto to try to help the Leafs do the same.
The 72 year old resigned from his role as Devils president and has been named the General Manager of the Leafs, a position that has been vacant since Dave Nonis was fired on April 12th.
Lou Lamoriello’s relationship with Shanahan is a close one and goes back to 1987 when Shanahan was Lamoriello’s first ever draft pick as head of the Devils.
Shanahan reached out to the Devils two weeks ago to officially get permission to speak to Lamoriello about a position.
Lamoriello had more or less been bumped into a role of president of the Devils, while Ray Shero took over as General Manager on May 4th.
In one nine season span from 1995-2003, the Devils went to four stanley cup finals, winning three times.
Lamoriello was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. He is going from a situation in New Jersey where head absolute control.
His duties with the Leafs have not been clearly defined for public consumption, but he’s a part of a multi-headed front office. He’ll be another voice in the room, someone who will provide some sage advice and wisdom.
