Thousands of protesters are expected to take to the streets again Friday tonight to protest police violence. With police forces across the U.S. facing increasing scrutiny over the deaths of citizens, thousands have been marching in demonstrations all over the country. Here at home, families of three men killed by local police are planning a rally on Sunday.
Organizers are planning two rallies this Sunday. One in Toronto and one in Hamilton. In the wake of the recent demonstrations in the U.S., families of victims of men killed by Hamilton police say now is the time to rise up and make sure police here are held accountable.
Norm Dorr, Father-in-Law of Steve Mesic: “I’m frustrated because I know more people will be shot by police and it could be anyone’s son or daughter, it could be anybody, it could be somebody handicapped because police are still profiling and discriminating and this is what we have to change. We have to make police more accountable for their actions. What’s going on in the States is tragic. Now is the time because if we wait and don’t act as soon as possible, there’s going to be more innocent people killed by police.”
There will be two other families involved in the rally. Natasha Thompson, the widow of Phonesay Canthachak is scheduled to be there. Canthachak was shot and killed by police after being blocked in by them while driving a stolen van.
The family of Andreas Chinnery will also take part. He was 19-years old when he was shot by police inside his apartment on Barton Street in February 2011. Police say he was swinging a baseball bat.
The rally in Hamilton starts at 10am at city hall. In Toronto, it’s at 1pm at 26 Grosvenor Street.
Police say statistics show use of deadly force is extremely rare, but say that any such death is tragic.
