Lawyers call for charges to be dropped in Lac-Megantic disaster

First Published:

Lawyers for two of the three men accused in the Lac-Megantic tragedy are calling for their criminal charges to be dropped.

Train engineer Tom Harding, railway traffic controller Richard Labrie, and manager of train operations Jean Demaitre, each face 47 charges of criminal negligence causing death, one for each victim of the July 2013 train derailment.

But lawyers for Harding and Labrie say the charges should be dropped in light of the Transportation Safety Board’s final report on the disaster.

It criticized both the railway and Transport Canada for poor oversight.
