Last bison caught

After days of bison on the loose in Niagara Falls they have all been rounded up.

It was like a scene from a western, only this was a real bison on the loose near a busy Niagara road and real cowboys, who know how to use a lasso, were chasing her.

“The guys went around the field and spotted it on the other side of the bush. Then we pushed her out to the open, but she outrun us across to another little bush. And they always have a tendency to circle back to where they’re comfortable.” said Tyler Foster, from Foster’s Cattle Recovery.

In total they spent about 3 hours, starting from a backyard where the 800-pound animal had last been seen.

The team from Foster’s Cattle Recovery near Alvinston used dogs to locate the bison, and circled the area of rural Niagara Falls with horses and ATV’s.

At one point the female almost ran into traffic on Montrose Road, recalling the incident the first day the bison were loose, and one was killed by cars. A day later the Fosters rounded up her calf, but it took several more days to find the last missing bison.

“This was not an easy catch. If it were easy they wouldn’t have called us.”

Experts from Alberta all the way this way said this couldn’t be done so they’ve done a good job. They’re very hard to capture.

“It’s been a very long week. It’s an emotional thing. A huge relief. It was a huge public safety issue, if it got on the road.” said Bill Ashcroft, from the Niagara Falls Humane Soceity.

The OSPCA says charges may be laid against the owner of the bison for not keeping them contained, but that decision hasn’t been finalized.
