Laggies is a romantic comedy directed by Lynn Shelton (Touchy Feely). The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. The cast stars Keira Knightley, Chloë Grace Moretz, Sam Rockwell, Kaitlyn Dever, Jeff Garlin, Ellie Kemper, and Mark Webber.
Overeducated and underemployed, 28 year old Megan (Keira Knightley) is in the throes of a quarterlife crisis. Squarely into adulthood with no career prospects, no particular motivation to think about her future and no one to relate to, Megan is comfortable lagging a few steps behind – while her friends check off milestones and celebrate their new grown-up status. When her high-school sweetheart (Mark Webber) proposes, Megan panics and– given an unexpected opportunity to escape for a week – hides out in the home of her new friend, 16-year old Annika (Chloë Grace Moretz) and Annika’s world-weary single dad Craig (Sam Rockwell).
Shelton had to press the studio to shoot the film in Seattle, the city she grew up in and has shot most of her features in. It helped that she already had a team in place there. “It took a little bit to convince them that it was going to be an affordable place to shoot,” she explains. “They were talking about bringing up department heads and housing them and I was like, ‘No, no, no, you don’t understand. I have an entire crew up there just waiting to make a movie.’”
Laggies is rated 14A.
