(Updated) The final bell has rung after day one — and kids are home after their first day back at school.

From the wee little ones to teenagers, an estimated 5 million children went through the doors of elementary and secondary schools across Canada today. Now that the day is done CHCH News spoke with some kids who told us how things went at school.

“It was good.”
“Great!”
“It was amazing, I got to see my friends. I’m just really happy to be here again.”

And even the kids dreading the first day had some fun once they arrived.

“At first I was really nervous but I started to bond with new people that came into my class so it was really kind of cool to meet some new friends.”

It wasn’t easy for some parents to let their kids go this morning.

“the younger they are you get to keep them at home and they want to hangout with you but later on they will go off on their own and see their own friends… Its nice to get back into the routine but I would have liked two more weeks.

And the question every parent asks: what did the kids do at school today?

“We didn’t do any work.”
“We got to know each other, play a couple of games.”
“We didn’t get to do that much work, all we had to do was write our names and do other stuff.”

We learned what the highlight was for one new kindergarten student.

“My favourite part was playing and having fun with my friends.”

And now that the first day is done, the parents will have some homework of their own.

“Lots of forms.”
“There’s going to be a ton of paperwork, things to sign, permission forms, contact information.”

Luckily for some kids they don’t have too much to do tonight. They will head to bed and do it all over again tomorrow.
