Jeremy Hall’s second degree murder trial got underway Wednesday at the Welland Courthouse. The victim in this case is Kelvin Sawa.

Both men were inmates at the Niagara Detention Centre when Sawa hanged himself in his cell.

The prosecution is alleging that Hall’s violent threats are the reason Sawa ended up dead. Jeremy Hall was charged with Kelvin Sawa’s death in August 2011. Sawa had been charged with sexually assaulting a 14 year old boy. Word got out about the charges against Sawa and he was later found hanging in his cell.

More than two dozen witnesses are expected to testify at this trial, including a number of inmates in the jail at the time.

The trial continues Thursday.
