Two construction workers are dead after an industrial accident at a condo development in Toronto’s west end. It happened late this morning in the area of Bloor and Keele Street near High Park.

Hours after losing two of their own, dozens of construction workers silently waited around the site of the accident, consoling one another . One man in his 50’s was pronounced dead on scene after a hydraulic platform about six storeys up gave way. One man says he has known his colleague since he was 7 years old. “Amazing guy. Quiet, always friendly, always a smile on his face and he just had a granddaughter being born last week.”

A second construction worker in his 30’s was rushed to hospital but later died of his injuries.

Thelma Morgan lives in an apartment directly across from the Daniels Corporation condo under construction. She says she saw the moment the platform collapsed. “It was just like a crack – and then a boom. I thought I heard screams and then of course all the ambulances.”

The Ministry of Labour was on site this afternoon. Mitchell Cohen, President of the Daniels Corporation says they are fully cooperating with all investigations. “We are truly saddened by today’s accident.”

While some workers say it appeared the scaffolding structure broke in half, officials have yet to say what or how it happened.
