SIU probing fatal east Hamilton shooting

(Updated video) Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has been called in, after an incident at Albright and Quigley Roads in east Hamilton.
Police say it happened as they were conducting a criminal investigation. Reports say a suspect was removed from a van, after shots were fired.

Police are re-directing traffic at Quigley and King, and expect to do so for the next 10 to 12 hours. Police say there is no threat to the public.

Wow .... we've heard the gamut here .. from laziness to rookie mistakes. All this from the same people who would be up in arms if this man took off in his STOLEN van and ran down a dozen or so of the students out for lunch at the nearby school. Even then the Police would be in the wrong. The armchair quarter-backing is truly amazing. How about a novel idea .. let's hold the PERPETRATOR responsible for his actions. Yes .. the man that was in the STOLEN vehicle that would not shut it down and comply with officers.. Marc L needs to look up the definition of "cold blood", it doesn't even remotely apply here. As for "small time crooks, small time crimes" Marc .. no such thing if you are the victim of said crime. Don't participate in criminal activities that may lead up to you being shot by Police .. quite simple.

Easy enough for many of you to give your two cents, you didn't know Phonesay -He was a coworker and friend and a very kind person, he did not deserve to die over such a thing. This WAS police brutality! Better yet COLD BLOODED MURDER. LAZY cops pulling out their guns, with no consideration for the community or the consequences... But of course! No justice will be served! Our country's police departments... just a good old boys club!

How many clueless people live in this city. The police don't shoot because they are lazy or to show brutality. Police shoot when there is a serious risk of someone being killed and that includes themselves. So let's stop pretending that this guy was some sweetie pie. He is and was a criminal and for his lawyer to say she believed him when he said he was going to turn his life around after he avoided a court appearance and was found in a stolen vehicle makes the entire crop of defense lawyers look like yo-yo's.

I am a grade 12 student at BR and my friend and I were crossing the street to go get lunch when the shots were fired. There were students in both the plaza and in the stores across the street at the time of the incident. In my opinion it was a bad judgement call for police to open fire on the van with students in plain sight but since I wasn't in the police officers' shoes, I won't comment. But in response to Tom, yes there were in fact students in the vicinity who witnessed the incident. That's why I believe the investigation is taking so long.

I was the first person since he moved to Hamilton over 13 years ago, this is wrong. Just think what if this was your brother or father how would you feel close cousin, friend? police needs more training how many shots in the chest do you need to stop someone from moving??they said he died at the hospital but reality he died at the scene and crashed his van to the pole lets see how they trying to cover this up

Just wondering why it is being failed to mention that this man was driving a STOLEN vehicle??? The police were doing their job.. it has not been stated that the police shot him has it? maybe he died from his injuries from the crash?

I think Rob you got things a little bit mixed up here. 1. How do you know this guy didn't try to run over the officers, driving a van into a person is the same as having a gun. The police officers were not alone and where plain clothes maybe "pun" thought he was getting robbed? Second again the police did not just pull their guns out and shoot knowing there is a school around again there must be a threat to someone's life that warranted this person being shot. And last if this guy was in court or a good citizen when he should have been then most likely none of this would have happened. Another sad story for their family but let's not jump to police brutality.

Why does everyone assume the police are at fault. Why can't they at least wait for the results of the SIU investigation to see what actually happened. Just because there are schools near by does not allow police officers to stop carrying out their sworn duty. People need to learn to wait for facts to come out before shooting off their mouths.

I am appalled at the recent incident involving the young man, shot in cold blood by Hamilton's Fine Police Dept. This man was unarmed, a family man, a working father, a husband, a son, a brother. This is CANADA, Hamilton to pinpoint it down. This isn't Jane & Finch, or Galloway, or Driftwood Cres.. This is Hamilton. Small time crooks, with small time crimes. That rookie cop is making a rookie mistake. He should pay compensation to the family from his own earnings. This is unjust!!! Yes, I know what you are going to say!!! He was involved in criminal activity prior..to the incident/altercation with the U C’s… for what... buying a bag of weed???? Criminal indeed!! !! I'm disgusted... being from the East end of our beautiful province, having lived in every major city from Ottawa to Hamilton within Ontario…Hamilton is a joke, from the top down!! But that's just my opinion.

I feel it is unfortunate that this incident happened in front of a school but I dont feel that the police were wrong. I live in the same neighbourhood that I was born in and the crime rate is through the roof and not fair that the residents have to deal with it. If a police officer is trying to maintain the peace and law in his jurisdiction he should be able to do what ever it takes to do his job. When an officer asks you to pull over, YOU HAVE TO PULL OVER! What was this man hiding? What do the police know about him that the public did not? Was he wanted for murder or child abuse?
If somebody in my neighbourhood was shot by the police instead of another criminal, I would be happy to know that we are finally being protected and that maybe some of the gun slingers in my neighbourhood would think twice about coming around here in fear that the police dont take any nonsense from law breakers!!!!!!!
