Reaction to hair dye almost kills Fort Erie woman

It was a routine hair dye touch up; something Joanne Pollard had done for years.
But this time she had a severe allergic reaction, one that nearly killed her. And this is not the first time we're hearing about something like this.

In November we brought you a special report on severe allergic reactions to hair dye. We knew then that there were reported cases all over the world. But tonight Lauran Sabourin tells us about one in our own backyard: in Fort Erie.

Tell me where are the patch test kits just wondering has anyone ever found one in the box? Ladies wouldn't that make sense?

I will definitely ask my hairdresser about this PPD ingredient the next time I visit the hair salon to get my hair colour treatment.
On my initial visit to this new salon, I remember filling out a questionaire about my health and any meds I might be taking, but not a skin swab, so I will do some research on this subject, lest I suffer the same severe allergic consquences this Fort Erie woman suffered using a home product. Buyer beware, take heed ladies, and do your research/homework before something like this happens to you.

After reading this I am very anxious and scared to even think about hair dye.

I actually suffered the same thing about 9 years ago, I was in my early 20s and I live in Beamsville, Ontario. I used the same exact hair dye for 4 years: Clairol Herbal Essences Color Me Vibrant #70 Black Stilettos.
I never once had an allergic reaction. I always did a patch test, except the final time I used it. I my face swelled up like hers. I had what the emergency room doctors called a 2nd degree infection and burn to my scalp, face and neck. My ears are still badly scarred on the tips.
They told me if I had waited another 40 minutes before going to the emergency room, my forehead would have had "popped" like popping a blister, and it would have killed me. The swelling put so much pressure on my skull. My mother sat there and literally watched my face swell infront of her eyes.
Needless to say, I couldn't stand dying my hair for 4 years after that. Regardless of box dyes or professional jobs, there's always a risk of this happening. Some are lucky and some aren't. It's a shame they can't ban the products with that ingredient :(
